HAVERHILL — Emmaus Inc. opened its doors in 1985 to help families and individuals experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives. The organization has impacted the lives of more than 43,000 individuals and families over its 40 years of service.
On Friday, Dec. 5, Emmaus CEO Al Hanscom welcomed members of the public, community leaders and staff to reflect on the organization’s impact. Mr. Hanscom highlighted the dedication of our staff and shared recent successes, noting that “since January, Emmaus has diverted 26 families from shelter into safe and affordable housing.”
This past year alone, Emmaus has helped 1,929 people, including 500 children, through its shelters and housing programs. On any given night, 300 adults and children will call Emmaus home.
The event featured special recognition from several government bodies.
Mayor Melinda Barrett, along with the Haverhill City Council (represented by Council Vice President Timothy Jordan and Council President Thomas Sullivan), presented a special recognition. The entire Haverhill state delegation was present to share remarks. Massachusetts House of Representatives citations were presented by representatives Andy Vargas and Ryan Hamilton, and a Massachusetts State Senate citation was presented by senators Barry Finegold and Pavel Payano.
