EFFINGHAM — Simply put, it was a struggle for the Effingham volleyball team to contain the offense that Mahomet-Seymour brought to the table on Tuesday night at Effingham High School.
The defending state champions in Class 3A and the No. 4-ranked team in Class 3A this season, the Bulldogs dominated the Flaming Hearts (10-7, 1-3 Apollo Conference) in the first and third sets, winning each one by a score of 25-16. EHS battled back to win the second, 25-22.
“I thought their outsides did a really nice job,” head coach Laurie Bohnhoff said. “(Ava Yeakel) is a big hitter and a good swinger. We had a tough time with her and didn’t have a big enough block up against her. We couldn’t figure out how to dig her.”
Needless to say, Purdue recruit Lily Bosworth has help on her side.
Bohnhoff spoke highly of Bosworth following the match.
“She’s going to shut down a middle,” she said. “She definitely can swing and hit, but if you keep them off-balanced, they don’t get her the ball a ton.”
Defensively, Bohnhoff said that serve-receive was an issue.
But that comes with playing an elite team like M-S.
“Serve-receive, we struggled a little bit, but they got a couple of nice servers,” Bohnhoff said. “We were not getting aced; we were just not getting a really good pass and against an offensive hitter, like (Yeakel), when you give her an easy ball, they can get a good, hard hit against us.”
Averie Wolfe finished with one assist and seven digs. Alyssa Martin had three assists, one ace, one block and nine digs. Bailey Bohnhoff had one assist.
