PLATTSBURGH — It was a packed house at the Strand Theatre in Plattsburgh Friday afternoon, thought not with people.
Instead, the seats of the auditorium were filled with donations of food and baby products as part of the third-annual Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club Stuff the Strand event.
The club had set a goal of 7 lbs. of goods on each of the 901 seats in the Strand Theatre.
But by the end of the event Friday, they ended up with more than 20 lbs. of donations per seat.
“That’s over 9 tons of food and baby products for our neighbors in need,” the group wrote in a release on the event.
The club also has a contest for groups that bring in the most donations, with extra points given for baby food, diapers, formula and wipes.
Casella Waste Systems, the reigning champs in both the business category and overall, have retained their title for the 3rd year in a row with 5,024 points from 1,989.4 pounds of donations.
Winning the non/not for profit category was the brand-new Kiwanis Club of the Northern Adirondacks with 1,849.9 pounds, and the winner of the child-based category —for the 2nd year in a row — was the Morrisonville Girl Scout Troop #4202 with 173.6 pounds. All of the items collected will be distributed throughout Clinton County through the Plattsburgh Interfaith Food Shelf and Joint Council for Economic Opportunity.
