BEVERLY — The special election to replace state Rep. Jerry Parisella will take place on May 13, the Secretary of State’s Office announced Monday.
A primary for the election will be held on April 15.
Three Beverly residents have already announced campaigns for the 6th Essex District seat left vacant last month when Parisella stepped down to become a judge.
Shortly after winning his eighth term in office in November, Parisella was nominated by Gov. Maura Healey to become a district court judge. He was confirmed by the Governor’s Council in December.
The winner of the special election will represent Beverly as well as Precinct 1 in Wenham.
Beverly city councilors Hannah Bowen and Todd Rotondo are both running as Democrats in the race, while former Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce President Medley Long III is the sole Republican so far.
Long and Rotondo held campaign kick off events earlier this winter. Bowen’s is scheduled for Feb. 13 at the Backbeat Brewing Company in Beverly from 5-7 p.m.
Candidates have until March 4 to gather at least 150 certified signatures on nomination papers to submit along with other forms to local elections officials in the 6th Essex District.
Nomination papers are available as of Monday afternoon at the Elections Division’s Boston office and at the Beverly City Clerk’s office.
All forms and signatures must be filed with the Secretary of State’s Elections Division by March 11, following the March 4 deadline.
