BERLIN, Germany — Cumberland native and North Carolina State swimmer Daniel Diehl won a gold medal and two bronze medals at the World University Games, which concluded on Wednesday.
The World University Games are an international competition for university athletes from across the globe.
This year’s event featured approximately 8,500 student-athletes from over 150 countries across 18 sports.
Diehl won gold in the 200 backstroke on Wednesday with a time of 1:55:91, edging out fellow American and University of Virginia sophomore David King’s 1:56 flat.
Diehl took bronze in Monday’s 50 backstroke with a personal best time of 24:75, passing his previous mark of 25:22 at the 2023 World Junior Championships.
In the 100 backstroke on Saturday, Diehl earned another bronze with a personal best finish of 52:94.
His previous low was 53:07 at the 2022 U.S. Open.
Diehl, an Allegany High graduate, enters his junior season at N.C. State and was the only men’s swimmer to represent the Wolfpack.
Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble from the women’s team represented the United States, Lisa Nystrand swam for Sweden and Olivia Nel competed for South Africa.
N.C. State associate head coach Dan Kalupski was an assistant coach for Team USA.
