Free Thanksgiving dinners are still on the menu.
The Lord’s Day Dinner will be back at VFW Post 917 at 2435 Seneca Ave., offering sit-down meals and deliveries for those who cannot afford their own Thanksgiving meals. The meals will be served from noon to 6 p.m.
As is typically the case in the weeks before the big meal, dinner organizers Matt Davis and his wife, Yvonne are looking for a key ingredient to a successful event — a heaping dose of support from kind and generous community members.
“We have some very good people here in Niagara Falls — good donors, good volunteers – who have been with us every step of the way,” Matt’s said of the support.
Items most needed this year include turkey, ham, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, salads, pies, desserts, wares, and napkins.
“(We need) traditional items that go along with dinner,” Matt said.
For more than 30 years, the couple and their children, with help from community volunteers and supporters, have served thousands of dinners to those who may otherwise not have had any turkey dinner for the holiday.
These days, Matt and Yvonne and upward of 30 volunteers make meals for between 150 and 300 people, to be served both at the VFW post and for deliveries made throughout the area. The volunteers do everything from setting up the VFW Post, unloading trucks, working the kitchen, serving food, and making deliveries.
Food donations can be made at the side door at 1317 Ashland Ave. up until the day before Thanksgiving. Clothing donations will not be accepted.
