PLATTSBURGH — City of Plattsburgh firefighters have been busy the past few days.
On Wednesday, a structure fire caused damage to an apartment building on Margaret Street, and a day later, another fire damaged another unit on Miller Street.
In addition to the two structure fires, the department had to deal with 29 emergency services calls within a 26-hour window, a post on the Facebook page of the Plattsburgh Professional Firefighters Local 2421 union said.
“In just over one day, Platoon 1 and Platoon 2 faced a high call volume with full staffing considered at 9 firefighters, crews moved from scene to scene without a pause,” the union post said.
“Each structure fire involved multi-unit buildings with heavy smoke and visible fire. With the assistance of additional members called to the scene, an aggressive attack was made significantly reducing additional property damage.”
The fire on Miller Street affected six people who were aided by the Northeastern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross which provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing for five adults and one child.
Volunteers also offered health services, comfort kits containing personal care items and blankets.
Three additional residents on Margaret Street, one adult and two children, ages 5 and 13, were provided with financial assistance, comfort kits and stuffed animals after the fire there.
The city Fire Department was aided by the District 3 Fire Department and South Plattsburgh Fire Department through mutual aid.
