NEWBURYPORT — Bundles of discarded Christmas trees met their makers, so to speak, on Saturday when they were shoved into a wood chipper and transformed into mulch that attendees of Historic New England’s first-ever Chipfest could take home.
The Chipfest, which included hot chocolate, s’mores, and rides around the historic farm, replaced Historic New England’s annual bonfire at the property. For more than a decade, folks from across the region had brought their trees to the farm and watched as they were burned to a crisp while local firefighters made sure the conflagration remained under control.
Saturday’s event, which drew far less folks than last year’s bonfire, was held in snowy conditions as roughly 3 inches of the white stuff fell during the morning and afternoon.
Daily News photographer Keith Sullivan was there to capture the fun and the snowflakes.
