PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to RPI on Wednesday evening, falling in the final minutes, 1-0.
After over 88 minutes of a scoreless game, Sarah Sedlacek sunk a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to lift RPI to the dramatic win.
The Cardinals outshot the Engineers through the first 45 minutes of action, but RPI came out in the second half with a strong attack, leading them to win the shot battle 13-6.
Lauren Haley took the hard-luck loss in goal, making four saves in 90 minutes of action. Macie Bolton and Kelly Licata led the Cardinal offensive attack with two shots each.
Plattsburgh State moves to 2-6 with the loss and next heads to Morrisville for a conference matchup on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
The Cardinals put out a strong offensive attack in the first half of action, outshooting the Engineers 6-3. Plattsburgh nearly had a goal early in the game’s action, but a foul was called on the Cards, taking away a score that would have put the team up 1-0.
RPI nearly took a 1-0 lead of their own, but a shot from Micaela Ross hit the woodwork and bounced back out to the Cardinal defense who were able to clear the ball out of their defensive third.
The scoreless tie held through halftime as a steady rain began to fall for the second half. The Engineer offense put up a persistent attack and was able to get up 10 shots, but Haley and the defense were able to stall the RPI offense for the majority of the stanza.
The attack finally found the net with just over a minute and a half to go, as Sedlacek’s shot hit the back part of the goal, lifting RPI to the win.
TENNIS
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s tennis dropped a non-conference match in their final home game of the season Wednesday, falling 6-1 to NCAA Division II Saint Michael’s College.
Plattsburgh State moves to 5-2 with the loss and next travels to St. Joseph’s Long Island for a match on Friday.
Doubles action went the way of Saint Michael’s as they won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the point before Sophia Gottschall and Megan Phelps won their match at No. 3 doubles 6-4.
In singles action, the Purple Knights quickly clinched the match win, winning at the top singles spots in swift matches to defeat the Cardinals. In No. 5 and No. 6 singles, however, Plattsburgh played well, as Kristy Cantwell was able to win 7-5, 7-5. The final match of the day saw Phelps play well against her opponent, falling in three sets after taking the first, 6-0, 3-6, 6-10.
