CRESAPTOWN — An overtime goal by Gerald Mihailovich lifted Calvary to a 2-1 victory over Cumberland Valley in Mason-Dixon Christian Conference action.
The winning sequence began after a foul near midfield set up a free kick by Elijah Ziler. He delivered a ball into the six-yard box, where Mihailovich took a quick touch and placed the ball in the corner, prompting Calvary’s reserve players to rush the field in celebration.
Mihailovich was moved into the mix on offense after an adjustment by Calvary head coach David Ziler with the Eagles unable to manufacture a second-half goal in the 1-1 tie.
Calvary’s first tally came at the 27:22 mark. He ripped a ball from the right side off of the leaping Cumberland Valley keeper, who got a hand on it but could not keep the ball out.
Both teams battled the rest of the opening half, during which both sides had seven shots on goal, but Calvary held a 1-0 lead at the break.
Cumberland Valley leveled the score at the 46:12 mark. A foul in the box set up a penalty kick for Titus Hott, who found the right side of the net for a 1-1 tie.
“This was another great team win that was showcased by great defense, lots of hustle, and a whatever it takes attitude from the entire team,” Calvary assistant coach Bill Scritchfield said.
Calvary out-shot Cumberland Valley, 20-10, and had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Eagles keeper Peyton Poland made nine saves, and Cumberland Valley’s Quinten Cooper made 15 stops.
