METHUEN – Freshman Sophia Barbosa scored her first career playoff goal – and third of the season — coming inside five minutes of the third period which was the difference in the No. 6 seed Methuen/Tewksbury defeating the No. 22 seed Boston Latin, 3-2, in a MIAA Division 1 Round of 16 girls hockey state tournament game played Saturday afternoon.
This marked the third time this season that the Red Rangers met their MVC/DCL rivals, with a 3-2 win and a scoreless tie.
The win now places Methuen/Tewksbury (18-1-3) in the Round of 8 against No. 2 seed Malden Catholic (16-2-4) with the date/time/site yet to be announced. This is the furthest the Red Rangers have gone since winning the Division 1 state championshipin 2019.
Senior co-captain Bree Lawrence scored the team’s first two goals. Sophomore defenseman Lyla Chapman assisted on all three goals, while Duffy and Sarah Marano had one each. Goalie Lydia Barnes made 15 saves to secure the win.
