GREENSBORO, N.C. — Allegany senior Avery Miller captured the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics national championship Sunday in the heptathlon at North Carolina A&T.
Miller won by 433 points, scoring 4,924 to easily best second-place Gabrielle Crane of Acworth, Georgia, for the title in the 17-18-year-old division.
Mmekom Inyang of Richmond Hill, Georgia, placed third with 4,407 points, and Lily Brown of Pittsburg, Kansas, was fourth at 4,403.
Forty-seven girls competed in the event from 23 different states and Puerto Rico.
The national title is Miller’s second of the summer after she won the New Balance championship in the same event in June at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
With Jaicieonna Gero-Holt of Washington deciding to graduate early, Athletic.net has Miller ranked as the second-best heptathlete in the nation for the class of 2025 behind Janie Ford from Alabama.
Miller has received interest from more than 80 Division 1 programs including 37 Power 4 schools and is looking to sign in the fall.
The standout currently has official visits lined up with Clemson, N.C. State, Penn State, Maryland, Southern Methodist, Oklahoma, Indiana, Michigan State, Virginia and Big Ten champion Minnesota.
George Brown, Jade Bean and throws coach Nick Agoris gave up hours of their summer training for this weekend’s event and the New Balance Nationals, her father, Brian Miller, said.
This event concludes Miller’s summer track and field schedule.
