The first day of match-play was a very tough day for the area’s competitors at both the Mass. Amateur and New Hampshire Amateur golf championships.
Bradford Country Club’s Matt Lucy, the lone area player to reach match-play at this week’s Mass. Amateur, bowed out in the Round of 32 on Wednesday morning.
Lucy played solid at Framingham Country Club but fell 2-and-1 to Wollaston’s Jake Ratti.
Three area golfers made it to the Round of 64 at Concord Country Club in the NH Amateur.
None survived.
Atkinson CC’s Evan Desjardins drew a tough customer in Sky Meadow’s Brandon Gillis.
The Bentley University Falcon from Salem, N.H., fell to Gillis, a University of Rhode Island product, in 19 holes.
Atkinson’s Mat Gover, a quarterfinalist each of the last two years in this event, was not so fortunate this time around. He fell to Canterbury’s Scott Underhill, 2-down.
