CUMBERLAND — Landyn Ansel caught fire from deep in the first half, and it spread to the rest of the Campers’ offense.
Allegany hit 10 of its 16 triples in the first half, put up 50 points and cruised to an 84-32 win over Hancock in the Class 1A Region quarterfinal on Friday.
“I told them I wanted them to play to the best of their ability,” Allegany head coach Brandon Reed said. “I think they did a good job. Our defensive energy was good at times, had some lapses but you shoot the ball like that, makes things a lot easier.”
Ansel shot 6 of 11 (55%) from beyond the arc in the half and finished with 10 3-pointers and 33 points for the third-seeded Campers (11-12).
Reed believes it’s a school record for the most 3-pointers in a single game.
“Teammates kept finding me, I was feeling the hot hand,” Ansel said. “They kept getting me the ball, and it felt amazing finally getting my shot up, making all my 3s. Been waiting all season to get that done.”
Ansel also recorded seven steals and two assists.
“He always tells me he’s on fire, tonight he really was,” Reed said. “I was really happy for him. He puts in a lot of effort, works really hard on shooting drills. Tonight, he got the benefits from that.”
Allegany led 25-8 after one quarter and 50-23 at halftime.
The Campers shot 17 of 35 from the field (49%) while the No. 6 seed Panthers (7-13) went 9 of 22 (41%), but only made three triples.
Owen Rice scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, adding three steals.
“Owen played real well, he’s starting to get some confidence,” Reed said. “He was getting more playing time before Chris’s (Manherz) injury, but now we need him to step up and make shots. He’s embraced that role and he’s done a nice job.”
Alco led 69-28 after three quarters and outscored Hancock 15-4 to end the game.
“We moved the ball unselfishly, extra passes,” Reed said of the offense. “We’ve been practicing a lot with getting guys into shooter’s pockets. It makes life a lot easier.”
Jacob Anderson led the Panthers with 15 points, adding two assists.
The Campers advance to the region semifinals on Tuesday against No. 2 seed Mountain Ridge (13-9).
The teams split the regular season games as the Miners won 66-61 before Alco took the rematch 55-50.
It’s gonna be a tough game,” Reed said. “They’re big, they’re starting to play well. They haven’t lost a game since they lost to us. We expect a really tough game.”
