PLATTSBURGH — In an effort to support more Alzheimer’s disease caregivers throughout northern New York, the Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative (ADCSI) will begin expanded Friday wellness programming during the month of November.
“Statistics show that one in three caregivers live in rural communities,” Valarie Drown, director, Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative, said.
“As many of our rural caregivers can be isolated and have to drive longer distances to access our programs, expanding our Friday offerings will provide them with greater opportunities to be supported.”
ADCSI provides free supportive services to those caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders. In addition to its current calendar of wellness programs, support groups and respite care, ADCSI will now offer two new weekly craft activities on Friday, November 1, 8, 15 and 22:
– Clinton County Scrapbooking – These sessions will begin at 1 p.m. and take place at SUNY Plattsburgh, Center for Neurobehavioral Health, Sibley Hall 514 in Plattsburgh. Caregivers should bring their favorite photos to begin a special keepsake project.
– Warren County Crafternoon – These sessions will begin at 1:30 p.m. and take place at the ADCSI Office, 307 W Bay Plaza in Queensbury. Caregivers will engage in enjoyable craft activities spearheaded by ADCSI’s wellness team.
“Our programs enable caregivers to meet others who are going through similar journeys in a comfortable, relaxed setting,” Drown says. “Now our expanded Friday programs will provide an additional chance to bring caregivers together in one room so they can build communities where everyone understands what each person is going through. and they will have a lot of fun while doing so.”
The Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative provides free services in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Warren and Washington Counties. Those interested in learning more, and viewing a full list of activities, are asked to visit wehelpcaregivers.com.
