CUMBERLAND — Nine people and two animals escaped a fire that caused extensive damage to a Rawlings home early Monday.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said the fire just after 4 a.m. at 23420 Gold Eagle Drive began in a garage and extended into the residence. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
One person suffered minor burn injuries.
Damage to the home owned by Carol Ann Willis was estimated at $250,000. A fifth wheel trailer and a shed were also destroyed.
Fire investigators said the home’s location and ice hampered firefighting operations.
Fire departments responding included Rawlings, Potomac, Barton, Keyser, New Creek, Goodwill, Bloomington, Fountain, LaVale, Cresaptown, Ridgeley and Short Gap. Allegany County Department of Emergency Services and Tri-Towns EMS ambulances were also on the scene along with the rehab unit of the Eastern Garrett fire department.
