Three days after 11 West Virginia schools were reclassified for the 2024 football season, 11 more were adjusted by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Friday.
The West Virginia State Board of Education’s Review Board reversed a prior decision by the state’s Board of Directors Tuesday and granted waivers to 11 schools — including Frankfort and Petersburg.
Eleven more schools were reclassified Friday.
Moving from Class AAAA to AAA are Buckhannon Upshur, Capital, Riverside and South Charleston; from Class AAA to AA are Chapmanville, Independence, Lincoln, Nicholas County and PikeView; and from Class AA to A are Ritchie County and Summers County.
These are in addition to Tuesday’s moves: John Marshall, Oak Hill, Preston, St. Albans and Spring Valley dropped from Class AAAA to AAA; Frankfort, Sissonville and Wayne moved from Class AAA to AA; and Petersburg, St. Marys and Tyler Consolidated were bumped from Class AA to A.
The reclassifications only affect football and only apply for the 2024 season.
With Friday’s reclassifications, there are just 16 teams remaining in Class AAAA. As the top 16 point leaders in each classification make the playoffs, if there isn’t a further update to the playoff format, all 16 teams would automatically qualify for the Class AAAA playoffs.
