Fatal crash on US 281 South

PALO PINTO COUNTY – The holiday weekend had a tragic ending Monday evening with a one-vehicle wreck that left a Mineral Wells woman dead.

The wreck occurred about 5:33 p.m. on U.S.Highway 281 South, about six miles south of Mineral Wells, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A preliminary investigation shows that a 2007 Chevrolet HHR traveling south on U.S. 281 crossed the yellow center stripe, over-corrected and began to spin. The Chevrolet traveled off the west side of the roadway and struck a rock before overturning.

A passenger in the vehicle, 54-year-old Paula Ruth Kirkpatrick, of Mineral Wells, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three other passengers, two males ages 54 and 41, and a 7-year-old female, were transported to Fort Worth area hospitals with serious injuries.

The driver, Jonathan W. Kirkpatrick, 27, of Mineral Wells, was not injured.

The wreck resulted in a large response of emergency vehicles and personnel, including from paramedics and firefighters from Mineral Wells and Santo, as well as medical helicopters called to the scene.

The DPS report said a cause for the crash is not yet known.
