WILLIAMSVILLE — The Niagara Falls Wolverines had one of the most successful seasons in program history.
They were the second-seed in the Section VI Class AAA tournament, won 10 games and made it to the Section VI Class AAA title game for the second year in a row. Unfortunately for them, their season ended with a loss to their kryptonite, Lancaster 7-0, Saturday, at Williamsville North High School.
“It’s obviously a very tough loss,” Niagara Falls head coach Kathy Burke said. “We worked really hard to get to where we were and it wasn’t the way we wanted to end the season but I’m still very proud of the girls. We had a great season and we know that we’ll be back next year. I think it’s particularly hard for our seniors and I do feel for them.”
The Legends dominated possession in the first half and they were rewarded when Kylie Silvestri fired one into the far corner to give her team a 1-0 lead. The goal was Silvestri’s 10th of the season. The Legends were able to find six more midway through the second half to take a 7-0 lead.
“I think they really fed off one another,” Lancaster head coach Brianna Sorrentino said. “They kind of built each other up, kept talking, kept kind of figuring out ways to move. … They can see what’s on the field happening and they are the best at motivating one another.”
In total, the Legends outshot the Wolverines 23-3.
The Wolverines have finished the season 10-7 with marquee wins coming against Grand Island and North Tonawanda. After this season, the Wolverines are losing eight players from their roster.
“Beating North Tonawanda was a really good memory, as a recent win, the culmination of figuring out where our strengths lie and executing that,” Burke said. “Other than that, watching the girls come together and support each other. We did puppy yoga. That was a good memory. But beating North Tonawanda, beating Wheatfield for the first time in a while, it was a season where we had a lot of firsts.”
