FROSTBURG — Second-seeded Mountain Ridge punched its ticket to the region finals, defeating third-seeded Northern, 4-1, Friday in a Class 1A West Region I semifinal.
Mountain Ridge (12-2-1) will face fourth-seeded Southern at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for a berth in the state tournament. The Rams (10-5-1) stunned unbeaten Allegany, 2-1, in overtime Saturday in the other semifinal.
Allie Knieriem gave the Miners a 1-0 halftime lead with an unassisted goal with 18:52 remaining before the half.
She assisted on the next two Mountain Ridge goals by Myla Bernard and Ava Armstrong at the 32:58 and 29:15 marks of the second half, respectively.
Abby Nelson put Northern (10-6) on the board after an unassisted goal with 21:35 on the clock.
Fiona Ruddell put the Miners back up by three after scoring with 6:13 to play.
Mountain Ridge had the lion’s share of shots, 25-3, shots on goal, 18-3, and corner kicks, 4-1. Northern’s Veda Rebuck had 14 saves, and the Miners’ Taylor Lamberson had two.
