Lady Cards serve up another sweep in Jonesboro

The express freight train, better known as the Lady Cards volleyball squad, pulled into their home station Tuesday at Jonesboro High School to collect another victory and to confirm their status as the best team in Clayton County.

The seventh-ranked Lady Cards (Region 4-AAAA) punched the tickets of Forest Park (25-5, 25-14) and North Clayton (25-7, 25-7) to improve to 14-5 overall and 8-0 in regional play.

“It was wonderful win today because we are playing as a team,” said junior middle hitter Chanee’ Key.

“We worked together and we are undefeated in the region. We have the potential to go far, we just need a little work, but we’re having a lot of fun.”

The sweltering heat inside the gym caused more problems for the Lady Cards than the competition on the court.

Jonesboro hardly broke a sweat during its performance over its county neighbors. The two-game sweep over Forest Park lasted a total of 49 minutes. Their match against North Clayton ended with ear-to-ear smiles from players and fans after 25 minutes.

Middle hitters Chanee’ Key, Jeune Hypolite, Sharmesia Smith and Meisha Hill guarded the net like the officers that patrol Tara Boulevard, blocking shots and several opposing serves.

Outside hitter Shanice Smith came in on clean up duty leaping skyward to slam the ball and her opponents hard into the floor.

Prior to Jonesboro’s victory over North Clayton, Forest Park laid the hammer down on the Eagles winning 25-15 and 25-18.

The Lady Cards next face Dutchtown on Sept. 13 in a battle for first place in Region 4-AAAA on Senior Night at Jonesboro High School.

Forest Park and North Clayton will hit the road and travel to south to play Americus-Sumter. Both games will also take place Sept. 13.
