Lovejoy just can’t catch up to Starks; Mundy’s Mill

After playing through a paint- drying first quarter with limited action, Mundy’s Mill (1-1, 0-0) began to spray a heavy coat on Lovejoy (0-2, 0-0) in the second. The Tigers posted 21 points in the second quarter and never looked back as they defeated the Wildcats 28-14 Thursday night at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

Senior quarterback Miguel Starks displayed why he is one of the top quarterbacks in Clayton County by picking apart Lovejoy’s defense with his arms and legs.

Starks threw two touchdowns to wide out Donte McConico and rushed for another score to lead the Tigers to their first victory of the season.

“We came out and fought hard. As a team we did everything the coaches told us to do,” said Starks. “We had excellent play calling by the coaches in the booth and on the sideline.

Donte McConico made two great catches, all I did was put the ball up there and he made the plays.”

Mundy’s Mill looked impressive coming off the heels of its crushing 16-13 loss to Riverdale last Friday in the season debut.

“I’m real proud of our kids. We had two guys out with concussions from last week, so we had some back ups come in and step up,” said Mundy’s Mill head coach Kenneth Barrow. “I’m really proud of our defense for holding their own. We finally got our offense going where we can do some ball control. You gotta be able to drive the football and control the clock. That’s what kept us ahead and not giving them an opportunity to get back in the game.”

Lovejoy’s offense was ineffective for the second straight week. In last week’s opener, the Wildcats failed to score after being shutout 6-0 on the road at Sprayberry.

This past Thursday, they didn’t find the end zone until the fourth quarter with 10:20 left on the clock. Quarterback Kyle Lacy plunged in on a sneak up the middle for the Wildcats’ first points of the season.

“Coach Barrow had his guys ready to play,” said Lovejoy head coach Al Hughes. “Starks is a super player. He took the game away from us. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We are 0-2, but they are non-region games so we’re 0-0.”

Mundy’s Mill next plays as the visitor against Forest Park on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Lovejoy will look to bounce back and finally crack the win column next Friday night in its first regional game versus Mt. Zion.

Both games will be played at Twelve Oaks Stadium.
