First time for everything

Ola, Union Grove walk away with historic wins, Mundy’s Mill comes up short

The Ola Mustangs made some school history last Friday night when they won their first-season opener ever with their victory against North Oconee. In other football firsts, Union Grove beat Jackson for the first time with its 23-15 victory over the Red Devils. Union Grove rolled up more than 300 yards in total offense.

Mundy’s Mill came up short in its first attempt to beat Riverdale. The Raiders spoiled the day for Mundy’s Mill as Mbongeni Ndlovu kicked the game-winner as time expired.

The Woodland Wolfpack played in their first game in school history and came up short against East Jackson. Woodland is the newest school in Henry County.

n Among the best: The Eagle’s Landing Christian Chargers took care of business last Friday night with an impressive 50-28 victory against Athens Christian in Jonathan Gess’ debut as head coach.

Their impressive victory didn’t go unnoticed as the squad was ranked 10th in the first Associated Press High School Class A poll of the season.

Union Grove didn’t break into the poll, but picked up votes in the Class AAAAA Top 10 after beating Jackson.

n Coming home: Fayette County coach Tommy Webb has plenty of Clayton County ties. Webb is coming home Friday night to coach against his former team, the Jonesboro Cardinals. Webb was at Jonesboro from 2000-2002. He led the Cardinals to their last playoff trip when the squad went 7-4 in 2002. Webb was also served as head coach at Riverdale in 1999.

n Thursday night lights: Football fans won’t have to wait until the weekend to get their football fix. Two of the area’s biggest rivals will bang heads Thursday night at Twelve Oaks Stadium when Lovejoy and Mundy’s Mill take the field.

Lovejoy will seek its second win this season after beating Sprayberry last week. Mundy’s Mil dropped its season opener last week to Riverdale.

n Blasts from the past: Several former high school players from Clayton County had a roll in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ impressive 33-3 victory at Notre Dame.

Former Lovejoy running back Tashard Choice ran for two touchdowns and chalked up 196 yards to lead the offense.

Two former Jonesboro standouts led the teams stout defense as Jamal Lewis had eight tackles and Darrell Robertson had six. True freshman Morgan Burnett, a former standout at North Clayton made his college debut with six tackles in his first-ever college appearance.
