Clayton State students seek jobs, internships

By Curt Yeomans

FedEx Ground’s office in Ellenwood has received 166 job applications from Clayton State University students this year.

The company is a mainstay at job fairs held at the university each year, and several of the university’s graduates work there.

Some of the company’s employees end up attending Clayton State after they begin working for FedEx Ground.

The package-delivery company will be a sponsor of the university’s annual part-time career fair for the 13th consecutive year, because of the ties between its employees and the university, and the company’s proximity to CSU.

“It’s a way for FedEx Ground to give back to the community, not to mention find some new employees,” said Michael Morefield, a senior human resources representative for FedEx Ground.

More than 20 companies will participate in the Part-time Job and Internship Fair today, from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m. It will be held in the James M. Baker University Center. The fair is hosted by the university’s Career Services department.

This is the first time the jobs fair has been merged with granting internships. A larger fair is held in March of each year, and attracts about 65 companies.

“We provide opportunities like the job fairs so they [students] can create connections to help them launch their careers,” said Angelyn Hayes, the university’s director of career services.

The 24 companies scheduled at the fair include: Kauffman Tire; Kmart; T.G.I. Friday’s; Truett’s Grill; Gold’s Gym; YRC Logistics; The Georgia World Congress Center Authority; the United States Army; Copper Wiring Devices; The Leadership Institute; A Friend’s House, and Cornerstone Association, Inc.

Other participants include: the university’s School of Graduate Studies; AFLAC; Enterprise Rent-A-Car; Fastenal; Fulton County Human Resources; Livefree Technology; Nichols Cauley & Associates, LLC; the Police Benevolent Foundation; Primerica Financial Services; Randstad Work Solutions, and UPS.

Students are encouraged to bring at least 10 copies of their resume and be prepared to be interviewed. Some helpful hints from the department’s website:

• Learn about the organization before the interview.

• Wear conservative business attire.

• Arrive on time.

• Use correct grammar and diction.

• Be honest about who you are.

• Talk to the interviewer about your skills and strengths.

• Ask the interviewer what happens next.

• Follow-up after the interview by writing a thank-you letter to the interviewer.

“One of the things we often hear from employers is that students need to do their homework before the interview,” Hayes said. “Another suggestion I would give students is to listen to the questions being asked during the interview, clarify the question, if necessary, and answer the actual question that has been asked.”
