COUNCIL HILL — Midway had momentum, but it left with the first half.
The Chargers’ six-point halftime lead evaporated as freshman quarterback Lawson Thompson ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in the third quarter to power Deer Creek-Lamont to a 42-20 victory in the opening round of the Class C playoffs at James Bayless Stadium on Friday night.
Midway, which would have played Shattuck in the second round of the playoffs if it had won, finished the season at 6-5. Shattuck has the third-longest winning streak at any level in high school football history.
Deer Creek-Lamont advances with a 9-2 record.
The Chargers took a 20-14 lead with 1:17 left in the first half when Michael Frazier scooped a fumble and scampered 55 yards for the touchdown. Michael Campbell caught the two-point conversion.
“We played hard, and we felt good where we were at,” Midway coach Larry Childers said. “We had to come out and close the deal in the second half, and we didn’t quite take charge in the third quarter like we hoped to. We got behind and their defense is good.”
Midway got the ball to start the second half. The Chargers’ opening drive stalled out on a fumble and a delay of game penalty. Three plays later, Campbell scored on a 26-yard run to tie the game at 20-20 with 8:58 left in the third period.
Midway lost the ball again, this time on a fumble that was recovered by the Eagles’ Jace Whitehead. Three plays later, Thompson scored again with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter on a 22-yard run to put the Eagles ahead to stay 26-20.
For good measure, Thompson tossed an eight-yard TD pass to Hunter Whitehead with 3:31 left in the period.
“He doesn’t play like a true freshman, more like a junior or senior,” Childers said. “It was a tough loss. The kids fought hard. We’d like those mistakes back.”
Thompson finished the game with 89 yards rushing and completed four of six passes for 34 yards.
Campbell led Midway with 47 yards rushing on 16 carries and Rodriguez, the Chargers’ leading rusher and scorer all season, had 46 yards on 12 carries. Rodriguez also completed five of nine passes for 85 yards. Campbell also caught three passes for 59 yards.
Earlier, Midway tied game at 6-6 on a 58-yard touchdown pass from Rodriguez to Campbell with 5:16 left in the first quarter.
Thompson’s 12-yard touchdown run with 6:16 left in the first quarter began the game’s scoring.
