Published October 31, 2009 11:45 pm - Mayor wants street improvement committee By Liz McMahan Phoenix Staff Writer The Muskogee City Council’s Public Works Committee will consider a proposal for establishment of a Street Improvement Committee at its meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Voters approved a permanent sales tax for street improvements earlier this year. Under that vote, the Council is to hold regular review of the city’s street improvement plan. Mayor John Tyler Hammons has proposed a five-member commission be established to “oversee and advise the City Council on the use of the permanent street improvement and maintenance fund.” Under his plan, the commission members would be appointed by the mayor with Council approval. In addition to advising the Council, the commission would also be responsible for educating the public on street conditions. “The citizens have placed a great deal of trust in their leaders,” Hammons said. “We must return the favor by showing the citizens that their trust was not misplaced.” A copy of the proposed ordinance is available on the mayor’s section of the city’s Web site, www.cityofmuskogee.com.
