Chamber Notes: Barbecue festival expected to become annual event

By Gary Perkins

What an unbelievable and fantastic event we just had in downtown Fort Gibson. The first annual “Smokin’ the Fort BBQ and Bluegrass Festival” was a smashing success.

Because of the time constraints, I am not going to be able to cover all that went on and give credit to all those who participated in making it such a great event for our town. The newspaper covered it well, and there will be much about it in this week’s edition. I will go into much more detail and give out “special thanks” next week. If you were there, you know what I am talking about … if you missed it, you really missed out on a super time and super food. Plans are already being made for next year’s Smokin’ the Fort event. This will surely become a town classic.

I want to thank Fajita Rita’s for hosting our Weekly Chamber Luncheon for October. Their daily Mexican buffet has got to be one of the best in the state. Rene and Maria do an outstanding job, and we appreciate them. Those enjoying those spicy delights these past few weeks, were: Mark Young, Denise Bain, Jerry and Tonia Cooper, Brad and Linda Clinkenbeard, Don and Paula Foster, Steven and Cheryl Hill, Mike Bradley, Derald Glover, Kirk Boatright, Gabe Mosteller (and a guest from Armstrong Bank, whose name I missed), Pat Green, Lisa Clayton, and myself. For November, we are moving to Subway, on South Lee Street, here in Fort Gibson. We look forward to seeing many of you each Thursday at 11:30. Come and enjoy and bring a friend.

To date, we have more than $900 in sales for the Fort Gibson Christmas Ornament. In addition to the 2009 ornament, we had some special 2008 ornaments made, and are selling them as a set, along with the 2009 ornament, for $25. Of the 25 we ordered, we have already sold 16 of these special dual ornament sets. Plus, we have sold more than 50 of the 2009 ornaments already. Don’t miss out … get yours early. They are available at SonBurst Graphics, Scott’s Pharmacy and Granny’s Porch, along with the chamber office.

And finally, I want to thank the following people and businesses, for their prompt renewal of their 2010 chamber membership. Since the earlier list I reported, we have renewals from: Bradley Funeral Service, Larry Dale and Debbie Cooper, Classic Kitchen, Kirk and Linda Boatright, SonBurst Graphics, ONG, Sara Dunlap, George and Becky Faught, Garden Walk Apartments, McDonalds/Mathews Foods, Keith Hardware, Dr. Michael Nelson, Granny’s Porch, and Keane Construction.

We appreciate your support.
