Published October 21, 2009 08:14 am - Over a cup Geneva Taylor went to see the “Held in the Heartland” traveling museum this week in Muskogee. It will be at the Q.B. Boydstun Library here from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 28. The museum, housed in a bus, tells the story of the World War II prisoners of war held in the United States. Several of them were at Camp Gruber and were assigned to work camps throughout the area. Geneva was particularly interested in the museum, because her family, the Duggers, housed one of the prisoners at their farm east of Mazie. Geneva recalls that it was near the end of the war. While she doesn’t remember the man’s name, she remembers that “he just looked like an old farmer.” He spoke no English but “was glad to be in the warm and enjoying my mothers good cooking,” she said. The prisoner helped her father on this farm and ranch operation and “was well behaved.”
